The International Organization for Standardization, (ISO) recognized the importance in energy management and developed ISO 50001-2011, an International Standard for energy Management. It was established by the International Organization for Standardization. On June 15, 2011 the ISO 50001:2011 standard for energy management was released. It is expected to have an an impact on up to 60 per cent of the global energy consumption. The standard will lead to substantial, long-term improvements in the efficiency of energy (up to 20 percent) in industrial, commercial institutions, and commercial facilities in addition to a reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG), emissions around the world. ISO 50001:2011 outlines the requirements that an organisation must set up, implement and maintain an energy management system. This allows the organization to take an organized approach to improve the efficiency of their energy. It covers energy use and uses, including measurements and documentation. The standard will result in an improvement in energy expenses, greenhouse gas emissions, and other environmental impacts through the systematic control of energy. ISO 50001-2011 will provide a framework that covers all commercial, industrial institutions, and overall firm energy management, including the procurement of energy and its uses. It applies regardless of the size and nature of the organization. Compliance with ISO 50001 is 2011 will show that a company or plant has sustainable EnMS in use, have reached a minimum level of energy use and the commitment to continually enhance their energy efficiency.

The ISO 50001 2011 framework incorporates both technical as well as strategic management elements. This will result in broad acceptance of the Standard. The Standard will build upon the constant improvement and PDCA techniques used in ISO 9001 to ensure compatibility and to integrate opportunities. ENTERING ISO 50001:2011 U.N. Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) was one of the first entities to acknowledge the importance of industry in developing an effective response to climate change as well as to the proliferation of national standards for energy management. UNIDO hosted a gathering of experts in March 2007. It resulted in the filing of a formal request to the ISO Central Secretariat about the possibility of conducting international energy management standards work. In February 2008, the Technical Management Board of ISO approved the establishment of a new project committee (PC 242 - Energy Management) to develop the new ISO Management System Standard for Energy.

The project committee is made up of five observing countries as well as 35 other countries taking part. Associacao Brasileira de Normas Tecnicas ABNT & American National Standards Institute ANSI together form the Secretariat. The U.S. Department of Energy as well as the U.S. Council for EnergyEfficient Manufacturing are assisting ANSI in the development of the standard. In September 2008 the U.S. Council for Energy-Efficient Manufacturing met in Washington, D.C., then another one in Brazil in February 2009. Personnel who are knowledgeable about management processes (e.g. safety, quality and environmental) know how to set up an effective management system within an organization and incorporate it into the company's culture. These experts, however, generally lack expertise in energy efficiency. Contrary to industrial energyefficiency specialists who are highly specialized in energy efficiency, these experts have been trained and are geared towards the creation, implementation and administration of energy efficiency programs without a setting. Many training and experience is needed to properly apply the energy management standards. It is essential to create not only the internal capacity of the organizations that are trying to implement the standard, but also external capacity from experts to establish an effective implementation structure.
